Hold the date: 3 minute thesis competition Math Faculty heats at 3pm on Friday, March 1

This year UW is organizing a university-wide competition to profile grad student research. This Three Minute Thesis competition restricts graduate students to presenting their research in three minutes (no more) in plain English with the help of one static slide (no other props) before a panel of judges and members of the wider community The competition began in Australia, at the University of Queensland, but has now spread internationally. In Canada, UBC, Queen's, Western, McMaster and others have been involved over the past couple of years. 17 intrepid graduate students from the Faculty of Math have signed up for a two-hour heat to be held at 3pm on Friday, March 1 in DC 1304. Please attend to cheer the students and to (quickly!) learn about the breadth of research being done in our faculty. Refreshments will be provided.

Intellectual Challenges for CS Students

I’m reaching out to you because I have awesome opportunities to share with the Computer Science students at Waterloo and would greatly appreciate your help to get the word out. My name is Aaron, and I'm a recent graduate working at MindSumo. <http://ht.ly/fewut> Our company’s goal is to connect students to potential employers through technical challenges. <http://ht.ly/fewut> We just added two new challenges specifically for Computer Science students with prizes and internships offered from Box.net and Kayak. Box’s challenge <https://www.mindsumo.com/contests/71> asks students to write an algorithm to improve the speed and accuracy for a search function and has $1000 in prizes. Kayak’s challenge <https://www.mindsumo.com/contests/72> offers about $600 in prizes and requires students to submit code or pseudocode that will work in conjunction with a weather API to determine the warmest locations for travelers planning their vacations. PostDoc/Programmer for NSF Project on Influence in Science

An NSF funded project at the University of Chicago, “Tracing Influence & Predicting Impact in Science,” invites applications for a Postdoc Scholar or Programmer position. The Postdoc or Programmer will be associated with the Knowledge Lab in the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago (www.uchicago.edu), one of the leading research universities in the United States. Each position will be for 3 years, contingent on annual reappointment. This project develops new measures and models that assess and predict the impact of academic research on science, technology, and the public. Building on progress in the measurement of scientific and technological novelty, as well as phylogenetic models of evolution, advances in computational language understanding, and the increasing electronic availability of historical and contemporary scientific texts, this project creates computational tools to identify scientific claims, embed them in their historical, conceptual, and geographical

Programmers for Metaknowledge Network

The Metaknowledge Network, a multi-university research network, invites applications for two Senior Programmers. Both programmers will be based at the associated Knowledge Lab within the Computation Institute at the University of Chicago (www.uchicago.edu), one of the leading research universities in the United States. Each position will be for 3 years, contingent on annual reappointment. Metaknowledge research is an exciting new interdisciplinary field that blends Big Data, complex systems methods, and computational social science with insights from sociological, anthropological, historical, and philosophical approaches in order to develop "knowledge about knowledge." The Network will bring together domain scientists (e.g., biology, physics, social science) with computer scientists who have a history of building novel computational tools for complex data extraction, modeling and analysis. Network researchers will develop new tools to investigate the knowledge-making proces
