For the second year in a row, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto offer research internship opportunities to undergraduate students from universities across Canada, in the form of the Undergraduate Toronto Research Experience (UTRECS) program. UTRECS was created in 2011 in an effort to both grow our summer undergraduate research program and to create a richer, more diverse environment for both our students and faculty. UTRECS is a 16-week summer internship which pays students to work with one of our professors on a cutting-edge research project. Linda Warley (Assoc. Dean of Grad. Studies [Faculty of Arts]) is organizing a university-wide competition that will profile the research uWaterloo graduate students are doing. The competition is called the Three Minute Thesis, and the aim is that graduate students present their research in three minutes (no more) in plain English with the help of one static slide (no other props) before a panel of judges and members of the wider community, including members of the public. The University of Waterloo has not participated in this activity before, but we are excited to be doing so in 2013. The competition began in Australia, at the University of Queensland, but has now spread internationally. In Canada, UBC, Queen's, Western, McMaster and others have been involved over the past couple of years. This year Queen's will host a provincial competition. In order to facilitate international exchange and to educate undergraduates in research, the data management group of TU Berlin offers 5 research internships sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The students would come to Berlin for a duration between 2 and 3 months, with a start date between April 15, 2013 and July 15, 2013. The program includes a monthly scholarship to cover housing costs and living expenses, transportation , and health insurance. There may also be opportunities to cover the flight cost through other sources. IBM Research announces the 2013 Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship in Computer Science and Computer Engineering in memory of Dr. Josef Raviv. IBM will offer one postdoctoral fellowship to a recent Ph.D. who shows exceptional promise for a research career in computer science or computer engineering. The fellowship will be for one year, with an opportunity for IBM to renew for an additional year conditional on funding availability. The stipend will be highly competitive, and will include reasonable moving and travel expenses. A candidate must have received a Ph.D. degree between January 2009 and August 2013. Depending on proposed collaborations, the Fellow will spend most of his/her time at one of IBM’s worldwide research laboratories. The Fellow will be free to follow his/her own research interests, but is expected to work closely with other IBM researchers. We've been getting a lot of questions from people about Spaun, the world's largest functional brain simulation recently published in Science. The Centre for Vision Research (CVR) at York University offers a one-week, all-expenses-paid undergraduate summer school on vision science. This year's program will be held June 3-7, 2013. The program includes talks by CVR faculty members on current research topics in vision science, as well as hands-on demonstrations in CVR laboratories. The curriculum reflects the wide range of research areas at CVR, which includes basic research on vision in humans and animals, covering both neuroscience and behaviour, as well as applied topics such as computer vision, virtual reality, visual perception in low-gravity environments, and vision in clinical populations. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leading genomics institute, and our programmes are at the forefront of experimental and computational genome research. These research programmes include investigation of human genetic variation in health, cancer and other diseases, experimental genetic analysis of gene function in a variety of model organisms, biological studies of bacterial, viral and parasitic human pathogens, and computational interpretation of genomic data. The FEDS Arts Symposium is a grandiose arts festival taking place on November 27th in the SLC Great Hall from 9am-5pm. I am a PhD student at Computer Graphics Lab in the School of Computer Science. I am working under the supervision of Professor Craig S. Kaplan. We are seeking research participants for a study that involves one session lasting between 45 and 60 minutes. During the session you will be asked to complete two tasks. The first task involves sorting a number of arrangements on small cards into a number of piles. The arrangements are composed of four sets. For each set there is a sample image and eleven larger samples. You will be asked to pile the images according to your own criteria. The piles you make will be recorded for reference and analysis.
