CS research internships at the University of Toronto

For the second year in a row, the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto offer research internship opportunities to undergraduate students from universities across Canada, in the form of the Undergraduate Toronto Research Experience (UTRECS) program. UTRECS was created in 2011 in an effort to both grow our summer undergraduate research program and to create a richer, more diverse environment for both our students and faculty. UTRECS is a 16-week summer internship which pays students to work with one of our professors on a cutting-edge research project. The value of the UTRECS internship is $6,000 (additional funding to cover travel and housing expenses is available for qualified students) Information about possible research areas, eligibility, and how to apply can be found at: http://web.cs.toronto.edu/research/utrecs.htm Questions? Send an e-mail to us utrecs@cs.toronto.edu .

Three-minute Thesis competition

Linda Warley (Assoc. Dean of Grad. Studies [Faculty of Arts]) is organizing a university-wide competition that will profile the research uWaterloo graduate students are doing. The competition is called the Three Minute Thesis, and the aim is that graduate students present their research in three minutes (no more) in plain English with the help of one static slide (no other props) before a panel of judges and members of the wider community, including members of the public. The University of Waterloo has not participated in this activity before, but we are excited to be doing so in 2013. The competition began in Australia, at the University of Queensland, but has now spread internationally. In Canada, UBC, Queen's, Western, McMaster and others have been involved over the past couple of years. This year Queen's will host a provincial competition. We are one of 14 participating universities in that competition. To get the flavour of this competition I suggest you visit a few we

Thursday Spaun Chat

We've been getting a lot of questions from people about Spaun, the world's largest functional brain simulation recently published in Science. (http://www.sciencemag.org/content/338/6111/1202) While the software behind Spaun is open-source and available at http://nengo.ca, we thought it'd be good to invite interested people in for an informal chat about it. We'll do a quick ten-minute summary of our research, and then open up the discussion to answer any questions about Spaun and our other research. We'd love it if people were interested in playing with our software, and maybe even taking it in new directions. Time: 12:00 noon, Thursday, Dec 6th Location: 2464 PAS

MindSumo Contest

My name is Keaton Swett, and I'm a co-founder of  * MindSumo * ( <http://www.mindsumo.com/>  ). We are a marketplace where companies post real world challenges for college students to solve. Students get the chance to prove their skills, win cash prizes, and connect with companies that use MindSumo to actively recruit for jobs and internships. We are anxious to include Waterloo students, and give them the chance to solve challenges for innovative companies. I was hoping you could forward this opportunity to students in your department who might be interested in participating. Our challenges ( <http://www.mindsumo.com/> ) have proven to be engaging for students from Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, Yale, and other schools, and our student winners have benefited by earning money, and getting jobs and internships.

PHP, JavaScript, Web Developers (Software Company)

To whom this may concern, I am currently a Software Engineering student at the University of Ottawa, starting an internet software company called NoteShares ( https://noteshares.com ). I am currently in development, scheduled to launch a beta within the next 2 months. I am looking to get the students at the University of Waterloo to know about this. I have set up a private launch page ( https://noteshares.com ), and everyone who signs up is put on our list as "beta testers". Everyone gets a private invite link, and if they invite at least 3 friends, then they get early access to the platform. I would really appreciate it if you could distribute this to the students at the university. I am also looking for student developers who are very experienced and well versed in web development, specifically client server web development and social integration. I am looking for in depth PHP web development, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Node.js would be a huge plus. The network is

There are some financial firms where technology doesn't take a back seat. Headquartered in New York City, the D. E. Shaw group is a highly successful investment and technology development firm with an international reputation. Students with strong technical backgrounds are often drawn to our approach, which combines insights from quantitative fields, software development, and finance. We offer a stimulating work environment and colleagues from the best science and engineering programs in the world. Our team includes Putnam Fellows, International Math Olympiad medalists, patent holders, and hundreds of people passionate about CS, EE, physics, and math. The work environment at the firm is incredibly stimulating and enriching, but surprisingly casual for the financial industry. Our culture doesn't fit the typical corporate mold: though we're competitive people, we're not competitive with each other; you'll see more jeans than suits in our offices; and we
