Hackfest 2012

Hi,

Let me introduce myself. I'm co-founder of Hackfest (http://www.hackfest.ca/en/) an annual Information Security conference being held in Quebec city November 2nd and 3rd. During this event, security and ethical hacking games and talks (many of them in English) will be presented in a sandboxed environment. Hackfest is the biggest event of its kind East of Toronto.

I'm writting today to invite you and your students to not only to join us for the conference, but also participate in the events on Friday and Saturday. The games are designed for the novice "hacker" as well as the experienced security professional. On top of that, we're offering a student discount of 50% (40$ per person) for groups over 4. If this offer interests you or any of your students, please contact us so we can proceed with their registration.

Here are the details of the games:

*Friday November 2nd 19h00 to 02h00: Hackfest Cyberwar* (Registration and

*Teams of 1 to 10 people*

Friday's game is like a giant Risk based game which consists of a "Capture the Flag" type "Red/Blue" where teams have to secure their infrastructures while they're attacking enemies (other teams). Players will be dropped in a realistic environment of cyber war-fare (more detailed information can be found on our website).

What to expect and go up against:
-Internet simulation
-Anonymity systems
-Military base with SCADA system
-International banking system
-Many operating systems like: CentOS, Windows and Debian
-IP Telephony systems
-And many more...

*Saturday November 3rd 18h30 to 02h00: Hackfest CTF* (Registration and

*Teams of 4 persons*

Saturday night challenge is a "Capture the Flag" style game pitting all teams against a common set of hosts. Teams will need to exhibit an array of different skills during this challenge. Just like Friday's game, they'll earn points by exploiting vulnerabilities and weaknesses. Saturday's challenges will be something like this:
-Relatively easy to understand
-Technical dificulty: easy/medium/hard/hardcore
-Wide variety of vulnerabilities

-Crypto
-Crackme
-Quizz

The Hackfest event and evening games are an ideal setting for security enthusiast, newcomers and seasoned professionals to meet up and discuss all things security. Be it the latest in defensive and offensive security techniques, reverse-engineering and much more. Both nights will include a live DJ, lock picking demonstrations, unique vendor specific challenges (with some nice prizes). (

Beginners or experts, your students will have fun and learn as well. They'll also have the chance to test their skills with the best people in security East of Toronto.

Grad students needed to mark reports for PD2
