Geek Week in Ottawa - October 19 to 27, 2017

The Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre and Public Safety Canada (CCIRC) and Public Safety Canada would like to extend an invitation to current students or recent graduates of Computer Engineering, Computer sciences, Information Technology and /or any related program to participate in our annual event, GeekWeek (https://g33kw33k.ca). The event is held from October 19 to 27 2017 in Ottawa at the Library and Archives building. This is not an internship offer as participation is not remunerated. However, it is an opportunity for students to work with cyber security experts and build their network in the field, as well as displaying their skills and potential to many employers on the lookout for new talent. The previous edition of GeekWeek welcomed more than 100 participants from Canada and six other countries representing no fewer than 60 companies in varying sectors.

The Canadian Cyber Incident Response Center, wishes to contribute to the training of the next generation of cyber security experts by enabling students and former students to put into practice learning acquired through their education. By participating in GeekWeek IV, students and former students will have the opportunity to learn from cyber security professionals and assist them with their projects.

For all students or former students who wish to participate, we ask that candidates be present at least four (4) days throughout the event, which includes the weekend of October 21-22. GeekWeek takes place during the fall break of several Quebec and Ontario Universities, and as such allows students to attend the event without hampering their academic career. We are committed to working with universities to offer flexibility to students who wish to participate. However, even before the selection process has begun, there are certain prerequisites for participation in the event:
•             The student must bring his or her personal laptop
•             The student must have his or her own working tools.
•             Students must be able to travel to Ottawa on their own and at their own expense.

We ask students and former student to send us their resume and a letter explaining their motivation and interest to participate in the event to geek.talent@ccirc-ccric.ca. If the student is selected for an interview, a transcript may be requested. Interviews will be done through Skype. Following the interview, the selected candidates will receive an official invitation as well as all the necessary documents and information to attend the event. For more event details, please visit our website at https://g33kw33k.ca.

GSA SPARK Join us in the fight against SPARK!   In GSA Capital’s boardroom sits SPARK — a decades-old blade server, entombed forever in acrylic to be displayed as a proud reminder of GSA’s journey.   SPARK was an invaluable step toward the sophisticated algorithms in use today, but was retired from active trading and destined never to be booted up again.    But last night, through a series of unfortunate errors, the server was reconnected to GSA’s internal network. In the decades spent sitting on the boardroom shelf its algorithms have warped beyond recognition. SPARK now has a conscience of its own...   Compete to win prizes! Compete with other students in a race to shut SPARK down before it finds a way to dominate every electronic trading market in the world.   For 21 days a range of exciting daily prizes will be on offer to those brave enough to take on SPARK in a series of fiendishly difficult challenges.
