The Nspire Discover Series organization at Waterloo is looking for individuals with knowledge in computer science to help us develop a workshop in the coming weeks. As part of our workshop, we are looking to integrate finance with computer science by implementing an online business simulation and helping students use trading algorithms.  We are planning on teaching students how to use coding to help solve business problems, and trade stocks. Nspire is looking for individuals who are willing to help us run this event by supporting us with their knowledge of computer science and/or finance. The Centre for Vision Research (CVR) at York University offers a one-week, all-expenses-paid undergraduate summer school on vision science.  This year's program will be held June 6-10, 2016. The program includes talks by CVR faculty on current research topics in vision science, as well as hands-on experience in CVR laboratories. The curriculum reflects the wide range of research areas at CVR, which includes research on human visual perception, computer vision, visual neuroscience, 3D film, immersive environments, and disorders of vision. The program will accept 24 undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in scientific research.  It is intended mainly for students who are planning to apply to graduate school in the fall of 2016, and who are interested in investigating vision science as a possible area of research.  Citizens of all countries are eligible. Mitacs Globalink is an internship program that provides funding for Canadian students to do 3-6 month internships in France (and a few other countries).  Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible; undergraduates must have at least a B average and must have completed their  second year of studies prior to the start of the internship. The Inria Whisper team would like to offer an internship in the area of software engineering, targeting the Linux kernel.  The Inria Whisper team develops the Coccinelle program matching and transformation tool for C code that has been extensively used for finding bugs and performing evolutions on the Linux kernel.  Over 3000 patches in the Linux kernel mention Coccinelle.  The project would depend on the interests and background of the intern, but would be in the general area of using or extending Coccinelle to better understand properties of Linux kernel code, and to  improve the Linux kernel's development. Gender inclusiveness in the software workforce is receiving a lot of attention these days, but it overlooks a potentially critical factor—the software itself. Research into how individual differences cluster by gender shows that males and females tend to work differently with software that aims to help people solve problems (e.g., tools for debugging, for end-user programming, for game-based learning, and for visualizing information). However, many features of problem-solving software are (inadvertently) designed around the way males tend to problem-solve. In this talk, I’ll explain 5 facets of gender inclusiveness in software and how they tie to a large body of foundational work from computer science, psychology, education, communications, and women’s studies. Dr. Owen Gallupe from the Department of Sociology and Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo is leading a study examining the effect of the sight of rewards on task performance and is looking for undergraduate students to participate in a one time, 30 minute experiment. This study has implications for incentive programs to promote good behaviour in prison settings. All participants will be provided with a $20 gift card to local businesses for their participation in this research. Participation will include a simple mental task followed by a short questionnaire. Women in Computer Science (WICS) and SAP are jointly running a workshop on computer technology, held at the University of Waterloo on Saturday, October 24, 2015. GIRLsmarts4tech is a day-long workshop aimed at encouraging young women to explore computer technology. Attendees will learn about various aspects of computer science, such as game design, user interfaces, and applications of computer science to other disciplines (e.g., music, science). This workshop is intended for Grade 7 girls who have little to no programming experience. GIRLsmarts4tech has run very successfully for several years in Vancouver as a joint initiative between SAP and the University of British Columbia. The October workshop will be the first offering of GIRLsmarts4tech in Waterloo. Depending on student demand, we hope to make this an annual or semi-annual event. Last year the Centre for Functional and Metabolic Mapping at Western University, introduced a specialized scholarship. Because of the great success we had with this program last year, we are once again offering this scholarship to students within Canada, both fourth year Under Graduates and Graduate students, who have some experience with MRI scanners who would like to apply to join us for this event that is being held:  February 18th - 21st, 2016 at Western University London, Ontario to work on our 3T,7T and 9.4T scanners under the direction of some of the finest research scientists Canada has to offer in this field of study.
