CS489: Stochastic Techniques for Image Synthesis and Biomedical Applications

Course General Description: This course describes Monte Carlo techniques widely used for the numerical solution of integral equations in different fields, from computer graphics to astrophysics. The first module of the course provides theoretical background on Monte Carlo methods, while the second and third modules are devoted to practical applications. The course closes with an overview of relevant interdisciplinary topics as well as research perspectives involving Monte Carlo methods. Course Objectives: This course aims to provide the students with theoretical and practical knowledge on effective and reliable Monte Carlo algorithms used in the industrial and academic environments. Despite its emphasis on recent developments in image synthesis and biomedical fields, the concepts and techniques learned in this course can be also employed in other areas of computer science since the practical issues involving the energy transfer methods depicted in the course can be directly relat...

DataFest 2023

The American Statistical Association (ASA) DataFest is a celebration of data in which teams of undergraduates work around the clock to find and share meaning in a large, rich, and complex data set. This year's Datafest will be held in-person. A key feature of ASA DataFest is that it brings together the data science community. Undergraduate students do the work, but they are assisted by roving consultants who are graduate students, faculty, and industry professionals. Many professionals find ASA DataFest to be a great recruiting opportunity–they get to watch talented undergraduate students work under pressure in a team and examine their thinking processes. After two days of intense data wrangling, analysis, and presentation design, each team is allowed a few minutes and no more than two slides to impress a panel of judges. Each individual in the winning teams will receive a  CASH  prize, upwards of $2,500 per team, applied to their Quest account. Prizes are ...
