Study recruitment - Effects of a nutrition application in planning and selecting healthier food options

My name is Marcela Bomfim and I am a PhD student working under the supervision of Professor Dr James Wallace at the School of Public Health and Health Systems, in the Department of Applied Health Sciences. I am emailing you all today because I’m seeking volunteers who have an interest in nutrition and are willing to participate in a study which focuses on the understanding of the effects of a nutrition application in awareness, knowledge, and skills for planning and selecting healthier food options in groceries. This research will hopefully lead to a better understanding of how to better design mobile nutrition applications to be used during shopping and eventually be used to help students make healthier and more sustainable food choices during grocery shopping.

If you volunteer as a participant in this study, you will be asked to answer a set of questions on paper, use a mobile application before and while shopping, and give us feedback about the application. These questions are related to your perceptions of nutrition and healthy eating. You will have the opportunity to use a mobile application which was designed to encourage users to plan and select healthier options during grocery shopping. In order to participate in the study, you must not be under any health condition that requires a strict diet, such as controlled ingestion of macronutrients (fat, protein or carbohydrates) or micronutrients (e.g. sodium). You must also own an Android smartphone with operating system version 4.0 or higher and be willing to download a mobile application onto your phone.

This study takes three weeks in total and requires that you use the application in three different days during habitual grocery shopping. Additionally, in appreciation for your time commitment, you will receive $30 in cash.
I would like to assure you that this study has been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo Research Ethics Committee. However, the final decision about participation is yours.

You may volunteer for any time between 9AM and 5PM from Monday to Friday. This first session will take approximately 1 hour of your time.

If you are interested in participating or you would like more information about this study, please contact me at mcostaca@uwaterloo.ca  and list your top three choices for when you would like to participate.  I will then send a confirmation email indicating that you have been signed up for one of those times, and provide you with further information concerning the location of the study.  If you have to cancel your appointment, please email me at mcostaca@uwaterloo.ca.

Sincerely,

Marcela Bomfim
