You are invited to participate in a study investigating
technology-facilitated sexual violence (e.g. cyberstalking, dissemination of
images, online sexual harassment, etc.). Specifically, this project will
examine campus community members’ (i.e. students, faculty, and staff)
understandings of the phenomenon, and perceptions of the role(s) institutions
can/should take in responding to online behaviours, such as
technology-facilitated sexual violence.
Shaina McHardy is a PhD student working under the supervisions of Dr. Andrea Quinlan in the Sociology and Legal Studies Department at the University of Waterloo, and will be conducting this study.
What will I be asked to do? Participate in a semi-structured interview that will take
approximately 60-90 minutes.
Sample Questions: On
average, how often do you watch/read news media? Where do you primarily get
your news? On which platform do you typically access news media (e.g.
television, internet, etc.)? Do you seek it out or just read/watch it as you
come across it? Where would you say you get most of your information regarding
law and the legal system?
What will I get in return? All participants will be entered into a draw to win 1 of 3
$25 gift cards for Amazon.ca
What if I change my mind? At any point prior to publication, participants may
withdraw from the study. Simply contact me at smchardy@uwaterloo.ca. Withdrawal from the study will not impact your
eligibility for the gift card draw.
The draw for the gift card will occur at the end of data
collection, which is anticipated to be 2 to 3 months after the project
commences, and the winner will be notified as soon as possible. This study has
been reviewed and received ethics clearance through a University of Waterloo
Research Ethics Committee.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Shaina McHardy smchardy@uwaterloo.ca, and she will
send you an Information Letter with additional details about what participation
will involve. If you have any questions prior to participation, feel free to
contact Shaina McHardy.
